Transport of aircraft fuselage sections

Innovative protection system

Airbus fuselage sections are mainly transported by land to the assembly site. Until now, the sections have been covered or thermo-covered during transport. However, the film used does not provide full protection against physical impact or severe weather conditions. What's more, as it is single-use, its use is not environmentally responsible.

Aeronautical equipment manufacturer STELIA Aerospace has just signed a contract with Airbus Industrie to manufacture the S14A section of the A321. This part of the fuselage, located forward of the aircraft's wings, is one of the two additional sections that extend the classic version of the A320 to make the A321. As part of the transfer of AIRBUS fuselage sections from Rochefort to St Nazaire, Mecanokit was asked to design a more effective technical solution than tarpaulins.

The aim of this innovation project was to design and develop an innovative product that would enable aircraft fuselage sections to be transported in a hermetically sealed articulated box in complete safety. The final test was carried out on 9 January 2015 and proved highly conclusive. The section was transported from Rochefort to St Nazaire on time and without any damage. Customers AIRBUS - STELIA Aerospace and ALTEAD were satisfied with the work carried out and are already thinking about future projects that could be carried out in collaboration with Mecanokit.
